Sleep Pt. 1: The Kind of Sleep We All Dream About

We all know what sleep is all about.

It’s that physiological function we’re supposed to spend ⅓ of our lives doing and which does us a world of good – it’s also not a routine many of us accomplish as ideally as we’d like. 

It seems that having trouble with sleep has almost become a bit of a “normal” experience – so much, so we might even be “naïvely” dismissing the underlying issues. Insomnia is one of the most unnoticed and unidentified cases experienced (affecting up to 30% of adults in the US).

But we can’t ignore it: sleep contributes to the homeostasis of the brain and body, energy levels, cognitive ability and many other key functions of our various organisms. 

Dysfunctional sleep can cause neural problems, negatively affect work performance, decision-making, relationships and even increase the chances of work-related and motor vehicle accidents. Our mood throughout the day can also be severely affected as we are more likely to remember and select negative memories after poor sleep.

Simply put: sleeping well is vital to our quality of life.

So, how to improve our less-than-ideal sleeping patterns? 

We’re not going to get into every sleep improvement tip you’ve probably already heard of. We’d like to share with you some unique scientific findings about how the Endocannabinoid System, and its interplay with CBD, can positively influence our sleep routine.

What’s at the Core of Every Sleep Improvement Tip?

Although we’re not covering every sleep improvement tip, we would like to reflect on the common basis of their effectiveness. In other words, what is it they all come down to?

You have to eat better, exercise, limit your caffeine intake and so on. Well, what they all seem to add up to is a healthier and steadier rhythm. Research explains that a lot boils down to setting our 24-hour body clock to a certain pattern or routine that our bodies can depend on.

If you eat at a certain time or sleep at a certain time, your body will gradually register and adapt to that pattern. The more you do it, at those certain times, your body will learn the “correct” times to release the hormones designed for making you alert and, similarly, those for sending you to sleep. If your sleep-wake pattern is irregular, your internal body clock might be unsure of knowing “what time it is” and, possibly, keeping you awake when you want to be asleep. Research has shown that the timing of sleep can be just as important to our health as the amount of sleep we get.

Remember: good, thorough sleep helps us to think clearly and be alert during the day. So, let’s not forget how the time spent awake equally influences how we sleep during the night. It’s just as important to optimise our alert state during the day, for many good reasons, but so that your body can simply be able to make that stronger distinction between what’s “night” and “day”.

Letting the Environment Optimise Your Sleep for You

Before we learn how to optimise alert and sleep states, it always helps to remind ourselves how our bodies have biologically evolved and how each organ has essentially tuned itself to the general environment.

Optimising our body clock is a sensory optimisation: the sun, as you can imagine, has a strong influence on us, specifically on our alertness and mood. Research has shown that going for a 10-30 min. walk when you wake, where you let the sun directly hit your eyes, fires off millions of neural connections in your brain, activating your body’s alert state. 

Let’s say we stay behind closed doors for the first 3 hours after waking. Notice how our bodies don’t, or barely, receive any external stimuli to signal that it’s daytime – it’s the very same reason why you’re told to limit light exposure before bedtime.

Just like exercise can help to warm up and recalibrate your body’s internal temperature after waking, cold baths and showers have also shown to be highly effective in making you alert (it has plenty of other health benefits too, so even more reasons to jump into an icy cold shower first thing in the morning, right?).

These may sound like simple things, but maybe that’s exactly why they’re great. They don’t cost us anything and could maybe even be “humbling reminders” of how our bodies and senses are inherently connected to Nature and the environment.

Everybody Has a Body Clock – What’s Yours?

Consistency, or rhythm, is key to building progress – and how we structure our everyday routine is basically how we communicate that rhythm to our bodies. 

It’s interesting to note that our internal body clocks and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) have been shown to have a significant influence on each other – and that CBD can influence the activity of the ECS.

But just like any other habit you incorporate into your lifestyle, it all comes down to finding the CBD habit that works just right for you and your everyday needs.

What a fantastic product. For several months now we have been using the LAYV CBD variant 20% daily before going to sleep as a routine. As young parents, sleep is sacred to us, but with children this is sometimes lacking. Calming without the risk of paranoia. I used to reach for cannabis on very sporadic frequencies to unload from a busy existence as an entrepreneur and journalist, but smoking weed or hash was always a gamble for me: 50/50 chance of a slightly paranoid experience that exacerbated stress rather than reduced it. For me, this is a good substitute that allows me to relax physically and mentally, but sin negative high. But don't think of it as a panacea; you have to create a peaceful environment for it to really come into its own.
