About CBD oil

CBD oil is a natural extract from the hemp plant that contains high levels of cannabidiol.

‘CBD’ is an abbreviation for cannabidiol and falls into the category of phytocannabinoids. This non-psychoactive cannabinoid comes from the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L.). Cannabinoids are single molecules, with over 100 different species found in cannabis plants. Endocannabinoids, on the other hand, are cannabinoids produced by the body itself.

CBD oil is used as an indication for oil that contains the component CBD. The origin of it can differ and is unclear for many products: synthetic isolate/CBD crystals or a natural hemp extract. LAYV CBD oil is sold as a dietary supplement and complies with Dutch legislation. LAYV CBD oil is made from legal hemp, not weed.

Cannabidiol (CBD) works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a system of receptors and neurotransmitters that regulate various functions in the body such as mood, appetite, sensation of pain and immune function.

CBD interacts with the ECS by binding to specific receptors, such as the CB1 and CB2 receptors. It influences the production and release of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. This interaction is thought to help regulate the ECS and improve symptoms related to a variety of conditions, such as pain, inflammation and anxiety.

It is important to note that the exact mechanism by which CBD works is still not fully understood, and more research is needed to determine the full effects of CBD on the ECS and other systems in the body.

The plant species Cannabis sativa L. contains more than 100 different phytocannabinoids, some of which have already been found to have bioactivity when absorbed into the human body. Humans and animals are endowed with an endocannabinoid system. This system produces many endocannabinoids that play important roles in various metabolic pathways. This leads to the assumption that the consumption of phytocannabinoids may contribute positively to a healthy lifestyle.

This YouTube video
gives a good summary on how the endocannabinoid system works.

No, CBD oil cannot make you high. The compound in cannabis that can get you high is THC, not CBD. This cannabinoid (THC) is known, among other things, for its psychoactive effect. This is why the EU imposed a limit of 0.2% THC for products made from hemp, which will be increased to 0.3% in 2023. LAYV obviously complies with this legal limit, so it won’t get you high.

Reliable hemp biomass from Europe. We only work with farmers who harvest on uncontaminated soil. We have this analyzed and approved before we use the biomass. There is even a tracking system that allows us to trace the origin of the plant all the way back to the field, so that we know exactly where our biomass comes from. LAYV 3% and 5% are full spectrum and made with natural hemp extract. The 15% and 20% formulas are made from natural hemp extract with added CBD isolate of the highest quality.

The hemp plant acts as a vacuum cleaner for particles found in farmland, including contaminants
such as heavy metals, pesticides, toxins and toxic fungi.

Did you already know that they even use hemp plants to purify radioactively contaminated soil in Chernobyl?

CBD is a pure compound in its own right, but the cannabis plant contains more than a hundred different cannabinoids and many more terpenes. “Full spectrum” is the term used for CBD oil that contains multiple plant constituents from hemp, literal meaning: a full spectrum extract of all natural constituents in the original plant. There is a lot of difference in quality of “full spectrum” CBD oil available and not every brand knows exactly what they are talking about. The various natural substances from the plant have (different) bioactive effects and scientific research shows that the interplay between multiple plant compounds can provide more benefits than pure CBD isolate. We call this interplay the “entourage effect.”

There is also CBD oil made from pure CBD isolate. This can be extracted from cannabis or chemically made resulting in synthetic CBD crystals. These often originate from China or the US.

The Entourage Effect is not a marketing term, but a synergy observed in scientific research between different cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. The natural constituents from the plant reinforce each other’s effect, or, on the contrary, make the effect milder. For example, CBD (cannabidiol) is known to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC (Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). Terpenes, the substances that provide a plant’s aroma, are themselves associated with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. It is also being investigated whether the combination of terpenes with cannabinoids have specific effects. In a
review
of several studies it is being mentioned that a whole plant hemp extract had better effects than pure CBD isolate.

Terpenes are natural substances that contribute to the plant’s unique smell, color and taste. The amount of terpenes in our plants can transform the aroma of the extract from nutty to citrus, pine or even lavender. To date, more than 200 different terpenes have been discovered in hemp. According to research findings, terpenes contribute to the “Entourage Effect” by cooperating with cannabinoids from the hemp plant. LAYV hemp extract contains several terpenes, such as Phytol, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene and α-bisabolol.

Flavonoids are versatile substances that, among other things, give plants their pigmentation (color), filter UV radiation, apply pollinators and prevent plant diseases. Studies also indicate antioxidant activity. In fiber hemp, you can find as many as 20 different types of flavonoids.

According to the
Medicinal Cannabis Bureau
(BMC) of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, research shows that CBD shows the following properties, among others:

  1. Inhibition of inflammation
  2. Protection of nerves
  3. Anti-epileptic effect
  4. Relaxation of the musclesAccording to the BMC, there is now also sufficient data available to show that medicinal cannabis can be effective and provide relief for several specific conditions. In doing so, it mentions:
  • Pain, muscle spasms and muscle twitching in spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Reduced appetite, nausea, emaciation and debilitation in cancer and AIDS
  • Nausea and vomiting caused by medication or radiation in cancer, HIV infection and AIDS
  • Prolonged neurogenic (nervous system) pain due, for example, to nerve damage, facial pain, phantom pain or chronic pain that persists after shingles has healed
  • Motor tics in Tourette’s syndrome
  • Glaucoma in which therapy does not help.

CBD oil is generally well tolerated by the human and animal body. Side effects may occur at higher doses. Side effects could also occur in combination with alcohol and medications. Side effects mentioned by users at high doses include: insomnia and palpitations, feelings of anxiety and dejection, relaxation, dry mouth, fits of laughter, hunger, stronger perception of such things as colors and music, languidness and a disturbed perception of time and space, decreased responsiveness and “high. The aforementioned effects usually disappear after a few hours.

Addiction generally does not occur when used in low doses. If there are past dependencies, then extra caution is important.

In the following cases, we do not recommend the use of CBD oil:

  • People with a genetic predisposition to psychosis or other mental health symptoms
  • People with cardiovascular diseases
  • Youth and children
  • During pregnancy and breastfeeding/lactation

Short answer: same plant family, different effects.

The main reason difference is: weed can get you “high,” while hemp cannot.

With such a clear distinction between weed and hemp, many people mistakenly assume they are different species. That’s not right. Hemp and marijuana belong to the same genus and species, Cannabis sativa.

In the Netherlands, “weed” is defined as any Cannabis sativa plant with more than 1.5% THC. THC, short for tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive substance in cannabis. The more THC you consume, the more changes you will notice in your cognition and how you feel. Essentially, THC gives you the “high” you feel when you smoke weed.

Hemp plants are defined as any cannabis plant containing 1.5% or less THC. Even a plant with 1.5 percent THC would be classified as a cannabis plant, despite the fact that 1.5 percent will have little to no noticeable psychoactive effect.

Categorizing cannabis as hemp or weed is similar to classifying all citrus fruits as sweet (orange) or sour (lemon), without going deeper into the properties of the fruit.

In the European Union, CBD is generally legal as long as it does not exceed 0.2% THC and is sold as a food supplement.

In other continents, the legality of CBD oil varies depending on the source of the hemp extract and the laws of the country or state where it is sold. In general, hemp-derived CBD oil is legal in most countries, but some countries may have restrictions on its use or sale.

We make full spectrum CBD oil with a unique extraction process under low pressure and low temperature that consists of only 1 step. We load the shredded plants into the machine, press a button and then collect the extract in a container. Furthermore, no harmful processing is required, ensuring optimal preservation of the cannabinoids and terpenes present.

Other extraction processes use high pressure and temperature and do require further processing. In the process, valuable plant components are lost, and that is a great shame. Also, that processing can cause the product to taste bitter, something you will never experience at LAYV. The above steps result in extracts with poor color, flavor and aroma with no desired entourage effect. Unlike extracts made by other methods, LAYV products have a mild, slightly nutty and a delicate floral scent.

We consider ourselves lucky to be the CBD product with the most retail locations in the EU. That means you can find LAYV CBD oil near to your current location (NL).

Take it easy: Begin with the lowest recommended dose and increase gradually until you find the amount that feels right to you.

  1. Check the label: each CBD product should have a recommended dosage and usage instructions. Follow the instructions on the label.
  2. Consider your body weight: Generally, a higher body weight may require a higher dose of CBD oil to achieve the desired effect.
  3. Use a dropper: CBD oil usually comes with a dropper for accurate dosing. Place the desired number of drops under your tongue and hold for 40-90 seconds before swallowing. Count the number of drops to figure out the amount of milligrams in there.
  4. Be patient and notice the effects: It can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to feel the effects of CBD oil. Wait to see how you feel before taking another dose.
  5. Consult a doctor: If you are taking other medications or have a medical condition, always consult with a doctor before using CBD oil to make sure it is safe and appropriate for you.

The onset of effects from CBD oil can vary from person to person, but it typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect. The length of its effects can also vary, with some people experiencing the benefits for several hours and others even a few days.

Conditions & Applications

While more research is needed to fully understand the potential medical benefits of CBD oil, it has shown promise in research investigating its effects in conditions such as anxiety, pain, and insomnia.

However, it is important to consult with a doctor before using CBD oil for medical purposes.

There is some evidence that suggests that CBD may have a positive impact on sleep. CBD has been shown to have sedative and relaxing effects, which may help improve sleep quality and reduce symptoms of insomnia. In addition, CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety, which is a common cause of sleep problems.

However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of CBD on sleep, and these potential benefits may not be applicable to everyone.

Additionally, CBD can interact with other medications and may not be safe for everyone. It’s important to consult with a doctor before taking CBD for sleep problems or any other condition.

There is some evidence that suggests that CBD may be helpful for reducing symptoms of anxiety. CBD has been shown to have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects and to improve overall mood. Additionally, CBD has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, which are elevated in individuals with anxiety.

However, more research is needed to fully understand the effects of CBD on anxiety, and these potential benefits may not be applicable to everyone.

Additionally, CBD can interact with other medications and may not be safe for everyone. It’s important to consult with a doctor before taking CBD for anxiety or any other condition.

CBD has been studied for its potential to relieve pain. Some studies suggest that CBD may have pain-relieving properties and could be useful for managing pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathic pain.

However, the evidence for the effectiveness of CBD for pain relief is still limited and more research is needed to determine its safety and efficacy. The results of some studies have been mixed, and the quality of the studies conducted to date has been limited.

It’s important to keep in mind that CBD is not a cure for pain, and it should not be used as a substitute for conventional pain treatments. If you are considering using CBD for pain, it is important to discuss it with your doctor to determine if it is appropriate for you and to ensure that it does not interfere with any other treatments you may be receiving.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been studied for its potential to relieve symptoms of anxiety. Some studies suggest that CBD may have anti-anxiety properties and could be useful for managing symptoms of conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cannabidiol (CBD) has been studied for its potential to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life for people with cancer. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support the use of CBD for the treatment of cancer.

The anticancer properties of CBD against cancer cells of different histogenesis were demonstrated in numerous pre-clinical in vitro studies (Section 2, Figure 1, Table A1). For many, but not all, cancer types, anticancer effects were also confirmed for animal models (Table A1, [6]). The synergic effect of CBD with conventional anticancer drugs encourages the inclusion of CBD in conventional chemotherapeutic protocols (Section 3, Table 1). The urgent need for clinical trials in developing CBD as an anticancer drug is proclaimed [6]. We provide here the suggested flowchart for the translation of the CBD anticancer activity from the lab to clinical trials and clinical use in anticancer treatments (Figure 3).” Miguel Olivas-Aguirre et al, 2022 (PMC8951434)

Some other studies have shown that CBD may have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, which could be beneficial for managing symptoms such as pain, nausea, and vomiting in people with cancer.
